My Movie Life: Total Film Questions
The First Movie I Ever Saw: Right, this has got to be one of two Disney films, I can remember watching the whole Disney back catalog as a child, but the two that i remember are Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Lion King. Snow white i had on an old battered VHS that i watched again and again, i can vividly remember the opening with the slow zoom in on the castle, and getting excited as a child....

19/07/11 - Amazing Spiderman News
After my last post, i was having a quick look around the internet at the latest movie news, and stumbled upon a teaser trailer for The Amazing Spiderman. This week is going down as the best in comic book adaptation history! This is less of a teaser, more of a trailer with awesome footage, a nice soundtrack, and an absolutely awesome POV shot that is enough to make your mouth water. Again, same as...

Is There Such A Thing As A Bad Film?
Recently this question has come up alot in conversations and lectures, is there such a thing as a bad film? I don’t mean is every film worth 5 star reviews, because to be honest i think the 5 star reviews are starting to become too frequent. What i mean is that people nowadays are getting bombarded with what other people think, and making decisions on films they have never seen. The amount...

Whatever Happened to Horror?
Horror Films are made to scare and shock the audience, but of late where have they all gone? When we look back at the classic Horror films of the past 100 years they still scare audiences of our time, but will ‘Paranormal Activity’ and ‘Piranha 3D’ really be classed as classical horror’s in 2050? I doubt it. Lets go back 70 years to Universal’s classical horror...

If you see one film from each decade, make it....
1900’s - Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1903) - One of the first full length films made, at 13 minutes long. Based on the novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe, this film used white actor’s in black face, quite controversial for a film about slavery. Pretty amazing stuff for 1903. 1910’s -  L’Inferno (1911) - Based on ‘The Divine Comedy’, and at 68 minutes long, this is a...

127 Hours (2011)
127 Hours (2011) I must admit, when i saw the trailer and read the article in ‘EMPIRE’ i could not wait to sit in a darken cinema and watch this amazing tale. Danny Boyle’s previous works, including Trainspotting & The Beach, are some breathtaking films so i had no doubt that this would be the same. However i thought it would be a dragged out story of one man trapped....

It’s A Wonderful Life (1947) - Christmas is a special time, especially for me! I love the Christmas films with a passion, but I promise myself only to watch them around the Christmas period, and if possible in the last few days before Christmas. Today was ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ starring James Stewart and Donna Reed. This was my first time watching it, and for the first...

Good Trailer, Bad Film (Part 1)
Ever seen a trailer that looks AMAZING, then actualy watched the film and thought; ‘Oh my god! How can this be THIS crap?!’ This is a small feature warning you…. Part 1: Wild Wild West (1999) If you grew up watching ‘FRIENDS’ on VHS like me, then you will remember the constant Wild Wild West trailer at the start of every video. I must admit i quite enjoy the...

They Don't Make Them Like This Anymore....
Part 1 - Frankenstein (1931) - This is the first part of hopefully many many more, ‘They Don’t Make Them Like This Anymore’ is a look back at some groundbreaking and truly amazing films, made before 2000. Last night i was lucky enough to watch an uncut version of James Whale’s 1931 horror masterpiece; Frankenstein. This was a centrepiece in the infamous Universal...

Sad day
I havnt posted a review for some time now, but now is a better time then any to do a very quick update. The reason i have decided to do this is because today Tony Curtis died at the age of 85. This has made today a very sad day for me, because he is one of my all time favourite actors, and he will be missed, not only by me, but everyone in the film business. R.I.P Tony Curtis, you sir, are a...

Inception (2010) - Two Years ago, nearly to the day, i went to Derby to see a preview screening of the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight, It had special IMAX parts and blew me away. This was the point where i fell in love with Christopher Nolan’s work. I since then kept looking for news of the final part of the Nolan Batman trilogy. However out of the blue was a rumour that Nolan was going...

'I GotThe Chance To Fall In Love All Over Again'
Shrek 4 (2010) - let’s cut to the chase, Shrek 3 was crap. From start to finish it was rubbish, with the only saving grace being the ogre babies. So I didn’t exactly count down the days till this new instalment came on the big screen. The story follows Shrek as he gets easily frustrated about his simple repetitive life, only to make a deal with (new character) Rumplestiltskin to live...

If it bleeds we can remake it.
Predators (2010) - Recent circumstances meant that I had a few hours to kill on my own in meadowhall, so I decided to see the latest release. Seen as I had missed the last showing I went to see ‘Predators’ instead. Being a fan for a few years I had been waiting for this latest offering of a green blood-bath for a while, but after reading recent reviews I was not expecting an epic. I was very...

I Pity The Fool Who Dosn't Pick This Up From HMV...
The A Team (2010) - Since i first saw the trailer for this remake of a popular american tv show, i was quite excited to see it. Being a normal 18 year old, previously obsessed with James Bond, the action drew me to this film more than any other thing, and lets just say action-packed is a phrase i don’t use lightly. From start to finish the action never stops to take a breath, i just hope the...

Toy Story 3
Toy Story 3 (2010) - I was away in America recently and managed to see a few decent films. And by far the best was the third instalment of the best animated franchise ever created (soon to be included in 1st annual Lewis Walker awards) ‘Toy Story’. I had to be picky and pay $25 for a ticket to see it in IMAX 3D, but if you have the chance to do this also? FOR GOD’S SAKE DO IT! It...

A gay love story? Maybe a little
I Love You, Man (2009)                 When I think of the best comics in films at the moment, five names spring to mind; Judd Apatow (‘Funny People’ and ‘Knocked Up’), Seth Rogen (‘Knocked Up’ and ‘Zack and Miri make a Porno’),  Jonah Hill (‘Superbad’), Michael Cera (‘Youth in Revolt’) and Jason Segal (‘How I Met Your Mother’). I know, I’m a sucker for Apatow’s comedies, but it’s hard not to be....

How To Butcher A Classic
Psycho (1998): After holding the original 1960 version of ‘Psycho’ in such high regards, the highest regard for so long, I thought I owed it to myself to watch the 1998 remake. I must admit on the outside this looks like it could be quite promising, with a fairly well known cast including Vince Vaughn (Dodgeball), Viggo Mortenson (The Lord Of The Rings trilogy) and Julianne Moore (Hannibal)....

The Fuhrer is attending the premiere
Inglourious Basterds (2009): So this is a film about Jews killing Nazi members, not a conventional cinema going experience at all then. In all fairness it is a Quentin Tarantino film though, so this kind of twist on history is expected. And what a twist it is! From start to finish this is a shot by shot masterpiece by the director of today.  The first scene, or ‘Chapter 1’, deserves a ‘best film’...

High Fidelity review
High Fidelity (2000) - Really? Another Cusack film? Yes, and for very good reason too! High Fidelity is a film about one man’s love of (not only) women but music aswell. John Cusack plays Rob, a record store owner who is in the process of having a mini mid-life crisis. After being dumped by his last recent girlfriend, Laura, Cusack starts to believe he will die alone. This in turn, leads to...

Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
THATS RIGHT! I ALSO REVIEW OLD FILMS! Black Comedy’s are hard to do, you need to have the right level of death/destruction with the right level of comedy, because if you don’t it would just look like a stupid film. Grosse Pointe Blank does not look like a stupid comedy, it is a well made, funny film. John Cusack plays Martin Blank, a hitman for hire, who has no problem with revieling...

Date Night with the Family
Date Night (2010) Going to the cinema to see a Steve Carell film makes me expect a certain amount of comedy. Let’s face it, Date Night deliver’s on every level. From the beginning, an average family, to the end, still an average family, laughs flow as constantly as a waterfall. The only thing that let’s this film down was the very obvious marrital problems Fey and Carell...
