127 Hours (2011)

I must admit, when i saw the trailer and read the article in ‘EMPIRE’ i could not wait to sit in a darken cinema and watch this amazing tale. Danny Boyle’s previous works, including Trainspotting & The Beach, are some breathtaking films so i had no doubt that this would be the same. However i thought it would be a dragged out story of one man trapped. This film does not disappoint, it is a brilliant, visually stunning film, that does not drag and at times is a very funny film. Funny? The sound of a man cutting his arm off shouldn’t make for a comical film. The film is so much more than this one piece of bloody self mutilation, it is a thoughtful look into who we hold close, what should be held most important, and how messed up our mind can be when in a time of crisis. The actually process of cutting off his arm lasts a matter of minutes, when in reality it took 44 minutes, and i for one could not sit through 44 minutes of the most horrific thing to happen. James Franco gives a fantastic performance, and should be regarded as one of the most gifted actors in Hollywood, once again showing that this man can not be typecast. One shot in particular caught my eye, and it is very early on in the film, let’s just say it’s jaw-dropping! An Ariel shot of Ralston (Franco) falling through the tightest spot into blackness. It is breath-taking, literally. So overall, i would highly recommend that you see this film, a brilliant, TRUE (Tipton….), inspiring film!

4/5 - Don’t Miss It.
