I hope this was real, not just a beautiful dream…
Inception (2010) - Two Years ago, nearly to the day, i went to Derby to see a preview screening of the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight, It had special IMAX parts and blew me away. This was the point where i fell in love with Christopher Nolan’s work. I since then kept looking for news of the final part of the Nolan Batman trilogy. However out of the blue was a rumour that Nolan was going to take ‘a break and play around with an idea.’ This idea took form in the shape on Inception, even the trailer was amazing. Clips of cities turning upside down, slow motion falling and hotel floors flipping over, this would be unmissable. I watched the whole film, without being able to tear my eyes from the screen, it was like a feast for the eyes, but not a feast that leaves you feeling sick, a feast that is so good, you dream about it for weeks to come. The basic plot is that Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a professional, taking information from dreams, but then he is a set a task to plant an idea in a dream. The first hour or so is quite slow, explaining the basic set out, however for the last 90 minutes or so, it is the best cinematic experience in recent years. the cinematography is amazing, my personal highlight being a fantastic fight seen between Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and some other guy that takes place in a twisting turning hotel corridor. This scene is just unmissable, amazing. The other main players Ellen Page and Nolan favourites Michael Caine and Cillian Murphy, who all are brilliant. There are some great set pieces and the feeling of suspense is felt throughout, i have a feeling we have a new Hitchcock on our hands. YAY! Unfortunately Hitchcock never won an Oscar, so lets hope this same fate doesn’t fall on Nolan, who deserves one for this masterpiece. As do DiCaprio, who, at one point, almost made me cry because his emotions were so brilliantly portrayed. I have the feeling that this is not the kind of film that wins Oscars, its not political, it isn’t a realistic film, but by god is it good. The ending is just out of this world, never have i heard an audience in the cinema go “AHHH WHAT?!”. It will leave you spinning (No pun intended). I have only wanted to watch a film again and again twice: American Beauty and Jaws. Well now i can add one more film to that list: Inception.
5/5 - unmissable.
